Butoh · Ritual Theatre · Archetypal Performance
Orlando Whales is a European performance artist working at the intersection of Butoh, ritual theatre and archetypal research.
The artistic practice investigates how symbolic structures inhabit the body and reshape perception through movement, repetition and performative scores. Archetypal systems such as Tarot function as dramaturgical frameworks organizing movement, composition and tension within the performance space.
The work explores transformation — a form of archetypal sorcery touching the tragic and the Unknown — through embodied action, ritual structures and symbolic imagery.
Across more than a decade of artistic creation, numerous original works have been developed combining physical theatre, gesture language and ritual dramaturgy. These include ALADDIN: The Awakening of Shiva, (PIN)OCCHIO: The Soul’s Journey, MORPHEUS: Sandman & The Seven Sins, NAGASAKI: Wilderness Mute and ICARUS: The Last Flight.
Between 2016 and 2022 ORACLES Theatre in Barcelona functioned as an independent platform dedicated to experimental and multidisciplinary performance.
Within certain performances appears the ritual alter-ego ORKA, a darker performative presence exploring instinct, chaos and the destabilization of fixed identity.
Current artistic research unfolds through ARKA XXI, a performative myth-making framework working with universal archetypes and symbolic systems to explore desire, transformation and destiny as embodied processes within contemporary culture.
Recent investigations engage with ritual magic, the archetypal figure of Santa Muerte and Shakespeare’s The Tempest, exploring themes of power, fate and transformation through embodied performance.
